Stem cell therapy cost.

Stem cell therapy costs from USD 1,399 in Colombia. Prices depend on the product, how many sites are treated, and what the package includes, and insurance rarely pays.[1]

What should the price include?

Clinics price by package, and two packages at the same price can cover very different things. Before you compare, check whether the price includes:

  1. The consultation and any scans
  2. The harvest, if your own fat or marrow is used
  3. How many cells, and whether that is a count of stem cells or of all cells
  4. Each injection site, and any drip added on the day
  5. Follow-up visits and who provides them after you fly home
  6. Hotel, transfers and a companion's costs, if the package is sold to travellers

Why do prices vary so much?

Same-day treatments using your own cells need a harvest and processing in the room; donor and lab-grown products are manufactured and shipped frozen.[2] PRP, the cheapest product in this market, had a median US price of about USD 800 per knee injection, ranging from USD 350 to USD 2,815.[3] Exosome and secretome treatments sold direct to consumers were advertised at USD 99 to USD 20,000.[4]

A higher price is not a sign of a better product. Ask what is in the syringe and how it was tested, not how much it costs.

Is stem cell therapy covered by insurance?

Usually not. No product is approved for the conditions clinics sell it for, so there is no approved treatment for an insurer to cover.[1][6] Across our review of patient accounts, almost nobody reported insurance paying for the cells themselves.[5] The exception is the stem cell transplant with chemotherapy for MS, which some US insurers cover.[5]

Should a clinical trial cost money?

No. A genuine clinical trial should not usually charge you anything.[7] If a clinic charges you to join a "study", ask for the registration number and the ethics approval.
